Nancy Call Torres

Nancy Call Torres is an accomplished artist who has been teaching oil painting techniques for over 12 years.  She created the popular summer camp Art Rules! and has taught well over 1000 students through the years.   Nancy is a “local girl”.  She started oil painting when she was 13, in the home studio of Burlingame artist, Pat Frey.  She relished her four years of art classes with Mr. Bill Smith at Mills High School, in Millbrae, and went on to receive a BA in Studio Art, with an emphasis in Painting, from UC Santa Barbara.  She has studied Portrait & Figure Painting in Palo Alto with Jim Smyth and Plein Aire classes and workshops with Bridgette Curt of France.  She has exhibited in group shows in Santa Barbara, San Francisco and Burlingame, winning several awards.  She has traveled to France and Italy to paint en Plein Aire.  Her Work has been purchased by collectors here and abroad.  She has been commissioned to paint portraits for many local families of their children, and homes.

Nancy has renamed and relocated her art studio. She currently owns and runs the Art Attack studio and gallery located in the Burlingame Plaza. Art Attack specializes in classes, parties, and art supplies.  From there she paints and sells her own pieces as well as teaches weekly classes in Oil Painting for children, teens and adults.  Art Attack also offers a Summer Camp program.  Summer Camp focuses on oil painting, but incorporates multiple mediums as well.  It is enhanced by a different field trip each week, to compliment the different themes of the camp.  Nancy has students who began painting with her when they were 7 years old, who are now Art Majors in colleges around the U.S.  Several still come home to continue classes with her in the Summer.   Nancy’s love of painting is infectious, and she takes true joy and pride in the work of her students, young and old.

Nancy’s current work is running along two different themes.  One is a series of large abstract paintings reminiscent of the movement of water.  The series is called “Searching for Peace”.   The series began with paintings inspired by the rivers of Montana, in shades of swirling browns and gold; and has currently evolved into more ethereal imagined waters in dreamy swirls of cream. Her other work is a lovely plein aire series focusing on her home town of Burlingame.  Nancy observes the details of our city in a loving and unique way.  Don’t be surprised to see her working at her easel if you drive through town.  You’re welcome to stop and watch a little.  It’s exciting to see a painting develop before your eyes.  It’s a little like magic.
